Sustainability and the circular economy are increasingly present in local initiatives, promoting innovative solutions for resource and waste management. An inspiring example of this movement is the upcycling project developed as part of the “Se Eu Fosse Mar” program, which took place in May 2022. In the challenge launched by Matosinhos City Council and developed by TREE - Collective Change, Viva Lab was invited to create furniture for the Matosinhos Municipal Markets made from the waste of the municipality's beach walkways.
Through the Upcycling Workshops, designed to inspire new ways of thinking and acting in relation to waste, we built stalls and benches for the Matosinhos Market and the Angeiras Market together with the local community.
The walkways on the beaches of Matosinhos, exposed to the weather and constant use, eventually wear out and need to be replaced. Instead of discarding this material, we transformed it into something new, functional and with a positive impact on the community. This is how the new stalls came to life.
This project shows how a Fab Lab can play a fundamental role in creating solutions for the circular economy involving the local community. VIVA Lab Porto thus reaffirms its commitment to social and environmental innovation, encouraging collaboration and creativity for a more sustainable future.
Next time you visit the market, keep an eye out and discover these special stands!
